Essay requirements:

Length and Format: 1000 – 1200 words (2 – 3 pages, Times New Roman, 12 pt, single space, including bibliography / works cited)

Tips:

1. Write on a topic that you are interested in and appeals to you.

2. Choose to write on a book that you HAVE read.

3. Avoid generalizations and truisms e.g. do NOT write “This is the greatest American novel!” This may well NOT be true. Besides, it adds nothing to your argument.

4. Be specific. Refer to episodes in the text or quote from it to support your point. However, do NOT retell the story. We’ve all read it.

5. Duly acknowledge your sources.
